HOMER "PAPPY" SHERRILL
Old Time Country Fiddler
Recordings from 1936-2000

Take a musical journey with Homer "Pappy" Sherrill from his earliest recordings in 1936 when he was 21 years old to some of his last recordings in 2000 when he was 85 years old. Hear Sherrill's music from its beginnings in the mountain string band style with Wade Mainer and Zeke Morris, into the 1940s as a member of Byron Parker's WIS Hillbillies, and then into the late 40s as the sound evolved into more of a progressive country sound when the band was renamed the "Hired Hands" after Byron Parker's passing. In the late 50s and early 60s, the sound became more of an old time flavored bluegrass band. You will hear examples of Sherrill's fiddling in its many flavors, including old time breakdowns, novelty tunes such as "Listen to the Mockingbird", "Cackling Hen", train tunes such as the "Orange Blossom Special", which Pappy plays true to the way he learned it from his friend Ervin Rouse in early 1938, beautiful old fashioned waltzes and hymns, and many more.

The 39 selections on the CD come from a wide variety of sources, including live shows, festival appearances, home jams, 78rpm records, radio transcription discs, and more. They are from the personal collections of Sherrill and others. The CD includes detailed historical information on Sherrill's musical career, as well as information on the musicians on each tune.

Sherrill is accompanied on many tunes by his long time musical partner, DeWitt "Snuffy" Jenkins, who was one of the earliest country musicians to popularize the 3 finger banjo style, predating Earl Scruggs by more than a decade.
